Grenache
Also
known as Garnacha in Spain, this varietal offers
characteristics which are at once fruity and spicy. You’ll
taste rich strawberries and possibly nutmeg, and they pair
beautifully with grilled red meats, (steak, ribs, good
burgers), or even beef stew. The best are from France, known
as Rhone wines, or Spain. These are Rioja.
Cabernet Franc
The cabernet franc is a
chameleon. Sophisticated yet casual, playful but slightly
assertive. Fruity tasting as in big black cherries, but
you’ll also note a delicate herb flavor and most people even
taste chocolate! How delicious is that! The best ones are
from France and you can pair them with grilled meats,
sausage, or a really good burger.
Merlot
This is a popular food friendly wine which pairs up really
well with steaks and grilled vegetables. It’s also a good
choice for stews and pasta dishes with robust tomato sauces.
These wines will be nicely priced but not too inexpensive,
more moderate. The best ones come from France, (specifically
Bordeaux), but California is now a major player with some
terrific product too. Merlots tend to be soft and silky with
fruity strawberry flavors, some red current and a mellow
undertone of vanilla
